If I Were a Boy -Beyonce ft R Kelly

This song was originally sung by just Beyonce, but she and R Kelly made a remix out of it. This version is a duet, so to speak. Many gender issues arise in this song. In the beginning of the song Beyonce talks about how her lover acts on a daily basis and words it in such a way to prove that she hates the way he acts. For example, the first couple of lines say that if she were a boy, she would put on whatever clothes she wanted, drink beer with her friends, flirt with girls, and hang out with whoever she wanted. She is being stereotypical of all men in general. She gives her audience the impression that all men are that way. She even says if she were a boy she would be a better man than her love and not take her love for granted. After making those statements, R Kelly steps in and responds to her. He sings it in the same way Beyonce does, but from a man's perspective. He says she needs to quit listening to her friends and instead, love, respect and trust him. He tells her that it should not matter if he hangs with the guys as long as he is coming home to her at the end of the night. He even fights that he does everything for her already as it is. Throughout the whole song they are arguing but R Kelly is singing it from the opposite gender's point of view for the sake of manhood. By him singing along, it does change the meaning. It shows both sides of the story. This song definitely would sell.

After listening to both versions of this song I definitely agree that the meaning does change when the male point of view is present.
